Aşık, written and directed by Bilal Babaoğlu, tells the story of Aşık Veysel. Veysel, who lost his eyesight at a young age, dreams of becoming a great bard (ozan) and falls in love with Esma. However, on their first night together, Esma, whom he married for a dowry, says, "My heart didn't come to you." This opens a wound in Veysel's heart that will bleed for years. For young Esma, who is not only married to a blind man but also burdened with household chores and heavy fieldwork in a large family, marriage becomes a torment. Veysel, on the other hand, struggles to make Esma happy... He hires young Hüseyin to help with the farm work. Hüseyin helps Esma, going through difficult times, find hope in life again. Their friendship eventually turns into a forbidden love. One day, Esma quietly gets out of bed, takes her bundle, and escapes with Hüseyin waiting outside. The next day, she realizes that there is money in her sock that she took off to see what was hurting her foot at the fountain. Veysel had understood that Esma would run away and put the money in her sock so she wouldn't struggle. Veysel becomes resentful of both his saz (musical instrument) and life. He retreats to a cave outside the village and plays the bağlama until his hands are blistered. His friend, the violinist Kasım, finds him and convinces Veysel by saying, "One who sets out on the road will find the way." Veysel and Kasım set off on a journey, Veysel with his saz and Kasım with his violin. Veysel, leaving his nest for the first time in the hope of finding Esma, embarks on a journey that transforms him into AŞIK VEYSEL.
