CARMINA BURANA

İstanbul State Opera and Ballet
Choreographic Stage Cantata

15nd International İstanbul Opera and Ballet Festival

CARMINA BURANA PROMISES A VISUAL FEAST WITH SPECTACULAR MUSIC!

Staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, Carmina Burana features a cast of approximately 250 people including soloists, an orchestra, a choir, ballet dancers, a children's choir and ballet, Modern Dance Istanbul artists, and specially designed teams, coming together in a "choreographic stage cantata." Atatürk Cultural Centre (AKM) Türk Telekom Opera Hall stage transforms into a visual spectacle, utilizing all its technical capabilities. Audiences watching Carmina Burana will witness a revolving stage, the transitions of the front and back wagons on the left and right, and the fly bars, each coded with a time code, seemingly dancing together. Carmina Burana's new choreography and direction maximize the use of the stage, turning it into a high-level visual show, with the AKM Türk Telekom Opera Hall's mechatronic stage design impressing as if it were one of the performers.

One of the key details in the direction is the use of the AKM stage undecorated and bare, with the lighting concept as an element of the visual show.

The direction of the piece is undertaken by Volkan Ersoy, Deputy General Director of the State Opera and Ballet, and Ayşem Sunal Savaşkurt, Chief Choreographer of the İstanbul State Opera and Ballet.

The 24 pieces in Carmina Burana are showcased with choreographies by Volkan Ersoy, Deniz Özaydın, Berk Sarıbay, Özgür Adam İnanç, Alper Marangoz, and Ferhat Güneş, featuring performances by MDTistanbul artists and İstanbul DOB Ballet artists together on stage for the first time, enhancing the narrative power of the dance in the work.

Known as the "Beuern Songs," Carmina Burana is based on 254 poems and dramatic texts from the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries, found in the Bavarian Library in Munich. Composed by Carl Orff, a musician from a musical family, as a stage cantata in 1936 using selected poems from these texts, it was first staged on June 8, 1937, at the Frankfurt Opera.

Carmina Burana is the first work in Carl Orff's Tironfi (Triumphs) trilogy. The text, which speaks of nature and love, is mostly written in Medieval Latin, with some parts in Middle High German. The work consists of songs with a rhythmic and metric structure.

Carl Orff's unique music meets impressive dances and technological innovations in a collective effort staged as a work, leaving unforgettable impressions in the memories of art lovers.
