The first information about mehter music, which is considered to be the oldest military music in the world, is found in the Orkhon inscriptions dating back to the 8th century. The word "köbrüge" which is used together with the symbol of sovereignty, the tuğ, refers to the kös or nevbet drum.
In Turkish Islamic states, the practice of encouraging their own soldiers in battle while scaring the enemy was common to all ancient tribes. Mehter music reached its most serious development in the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. After the conquest, he established the mevbethane (a place where mehter music was played) and ordered that the nevbet be played three times a day in many districts of İstanbul, after the morning, noon, and evening prayers.
In 1826, with the abolition of the Janissary Corps, the tabl ü alem mehterleri (mehter music played by the Janissaries) were also abolished and the Muzıka-yı Hümayun (imperial band) was introduced, modeled after European bands. In 1914, mehter music was re-established by Ahmet
Muhtar Pasha. The mehter band, which was established in 1991 within İstanbul Historical Turkish Music Ensemble of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, continues its work to preserve this historical cultural heritage.
In this concert, you will watch a concert that blends mehter music from before the Republic, from Kantemiroğlu to Ali Ufki, with mehter music that has never been heard before or has not been performed by any mehter, as well as well-known mehter marches.
