Using the tag “world music” for this project should be appropriate.
Even though a tag denotes an ambiguous conceptualisation, it refers to a new music genre that is formed by the coming together of various disciplines.
As a Turkish composer and a jazz pianist, I am situating myself right in such apprehension. The project, “Without Maqam”, promotes a different kind of music that is to take place in the joint space for which I have designated the compositions and the road map. On one side, there is Murat Tırnak, the master of Turkish wind instruments such as the Mey, Ney, Shepherd’s Pipe, and Zurna; on the other, the master of Western and Eastern percussions Engin Gürkey, and the jazz double bass player Kağan Yıldız will extemporaneously cover the music designated for this genre.
The project situates itself on a ground which will be reckoned in the traditional Turkish spheres as “without a maqam”, whereas on the European side, on a concept that includes maqams.
