The opera "Mehmet II (Maometto II)," composed by Gioachino Rossini with a libretto by Cesare della Valle, is one of the most significant works among operas related to the Turks within the Romantic period opera literature.
Considered Rossini's most innovative and ambitious opera, it features rich orchestration. The opera's carefully planned yet complex dramatic structure includes elements of melodrama, such as political intrigue, conspiracy, and tragedy. Set against the backdrop of Venice, the story revolves around a heroic conflict between two enemies, which transforms into the drama of an impossible love.
Premiered on December 3, 1820, at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, this two-act opera tells the story of Sultan Mehmet II, the seventh sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the conqueror of İstanbul, who falls in love with Anna during the siege of the island of Negroponte (1470) under the rule of the Venetian Republic. Unaware of his true identity, the Venetian Anna falls in love with Sultan Mehmet II and is torn between her loyalty to her father and her country and her love for the Turkish Sultan Mehmet.
