İstanbul State Opera and Ballet is staging "Faust," a masterpiece by the French composer Charles-François Gounod, which is adapted from the work of the same name by the German writer J.W. Goethe. The work attracts attention with its magnificent direction and production.
The libretto of "Faust," considered a summary of all of Goethe's works on literature, politics, and natural sciences, was written by Jules Paul Barbier and Michel Florentin Carré. The production, directed by Recep Ayyılmaz, features Zdravko Lazarov as the orchestra conductor and Paolo Villa as the choir director. The set design is by Efter Tunç, the costume design by Gizem Betil, and the lighting design by Yakup Çartık, with dance choreography by Beyhan Murphy.
The plot of the work, which has a dramatic structure and striking visuals, is as follows: Old Doctor Faust, in his gloomy, dark room, longs for his youth; he is not sure if prayer will alleviate his troubles. Therefore, he decides to summon the devil. The devil Méphistophélès arrives with a mocking smile and asks Faust what he wants; "Money, fame?" Old Doctor Faust wants neither; he only desires his youth. The devil agrees to give him his youth in exchange for his soul. And Méphistophélès plays his trump card. Suddenly, the image of a beautiful girl appears; this is Marguerite. Faust, seeing Marguerite, excitedly accepts the bargain. Thus, events unfold, and Faust, as a young man, leaves his fate in the hands of the devil Méphistophélès...
