The Reis al-Kuttab Mahmut Raif Efendi, that is, the minister of foreign affairs at the time, serves as the foreign service officer in our London embassy between 1793-1797. During his stay, he falls very much in love with a leitmotif in the rhythm of a waltz in a concert he attends, which gets jogged in his memory. Upon his return to İstanbul, he breaks this melody to his close friend Dede Efendi, who is among the most prominent composers of the period, and relates the melodies that were inscribed in his memory the best he can. In those days, Dede Efendi is in the middle of a composition in the form of a “kâr”, which is one of the most extensive forms of composition. He decides, in honour of his friend Mahmut Raif Efendi and as a kind-hearted gesture, to place the melodies his friend has passed onto him at the last movement of his work and goes on the call the work “Kâr-ı Müşterek”, A Co-partnered Composition. The Presidential Classical Music Chorus will perform this intriguing work composed in the maqam Rast, which has a special place in Turkish Music thanks also to this story, in the 2022-2023 Season opening concert.
