The Norma opera of Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835), one of the most prominent Italian composers of his time, will be meeting its audience at Atatürk Cultural Centre’s Theatre Hall on January 8, Saturday.
The libretto of this opera, which was written by Bellini in 1831 and staged in La Scala twice in the same year, was written by the most favoured libretto writer of the time, namely Felice Romani.
The Norma opera is considered a masterpiece of the genre “Bel Canto,” which was very popular from the half of the 18th century until the 19th. Furthermore, Vincenzo Bellini is the most prominent figure of "Bel Canto" genre. Norma, which is filled with several enchanting songs, including one of the best arias of all times, “Casta diva,” can be cited among the most distinguished works of the opera repertoire.
Described as Bellini’s best dramatic work, Norma deals with the themes of love, death, war and lack of loyalty. It takes place in Gallia. Norma, the leader of a Druid community in Gallia, falls in love with Pollione, a Roman that’s actually his enemy, and puts at risk all his beliefs and values. But after a while, Pollione falls in love with another priest, namely Adalgisa. Norma then flies into a murderous rage…
