William Shakespeare's immortal work "Romeo and Juliet" meets theater enthusiasts on both shores of the Aegean through a joint project between Türkiye's State Theaters and Greece's Athens Concert Hall Megaron and Yorgos Lykiardopoulos' cultural organization Lykofos.
In this international grand production, directed by Lefteris Giovanidis from the Piraeus Municipal Theater, four artists and a lighting director from the State Theaters along with a composer from the Presidential Symphony Orchestra will represent.
The project, which brings together esteemed art institutions and artists from Greece and Türkiye, aims to build a bridge between the two nations by merging them in the ancient crucible of art. Turkish and Greek artists; inspired by their rich cultural heritage and historical backgrounds, they re-enact "Romeo and Juliet", an unforgettable story of love, betrayal, friendship, and tragedy.
The project adapts Shakespeare's poetic masterpiece to the present day, bringing to life the world of two families living together in a Balkan city, not always in peace, but by fate: the Greek Capulets and the Turkish Montagues. Against a backdrop of crime, violence that has become a part of daily life, and madness, the love story of Turkish Romeo and Greek Juliet blossoms among people from different cultures and religions.
