Oktay Arayıcı, one of the prominent playwrights of the Turkish Theatre, tells the story of the “Women” who are cornered under the pressures of changing social life and strive to vindicate their name, being, and desperation through the lenses of a modern Orta Oyunu world of theatre. The scores for the play also bear the marks of the great pianist and conductor Timur Selçuk.
İnsaf Hanım, who lives in a debilitated house in one of İstanbul’s historical quarters with her daughter Gülsün, is no longer able to live by her late husband’s retirement pension, henceforth rents one of the rooms in the house, of which she is also a tenant, to Sıtkı.
“Had the dear-departed Ruhi Bey managed and owned a house, would we have fallen into this situation?”
İnsaf Hanım, finding herself overwhelmed by financial difficulties and the exacerbated pressures of living in an urban centre that is ever-changing, exerts herself to seek out a way out of this stuckness and writes a newspaper advertisement under the pseudonym "Goncagül" so that her daughter can have a house and a place of security. However, when two hundred and sixty-one letters are received, Ms. İnsaf, who realizes that she will not be able to meet all of them, asks her tenant for help. Sıtkı agrees to help the mother and the daughter, and he also talks with the suitors. However, later on, things suddenly become too tangled to be resolved.
“For all your high sentences about the greatness of love, why have you betrayed me?”
Gülsün, unaware of Sıtkı’s affections towards her, understands that what all her suitors want of her is personal expediency and that she has been seriously betrayed. She first sinks into despair but is then brought to her feet by the love she trusts.
Right when they feel most happy, however, a great surprise awaits them.
