The nevbe is a nakkare -a small kettledrum used in mehter (the Ottoman military band) music- with a single bowl and is also known as the ‘Rifâi kudümü’. Nevbe, which is usually called by its own name in Sufi music, also signifies a rite in which rhythm instruments like the halîle, the bendir, daire and the kudüm are played. It means ‘turn’ or ‘watch’. It was performed on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, at holy nights and the festivities of caliphate, wedding and circumcision ceremonies as well as the gatherings of bed’i besmele (ceremonies organized for children starting school for the first time). The nevbe is a membranophone instrument which has a width of 15 cm - 20 cm and a depth of 5 cm - 10 cm and is shaped like a conical bowl. It is made by stretching a goat or lamb skin on cast brass. The nevbe, which is composed of a single part, is played by holding it tightly between the left arm and the body while beating with a piece of strap in the right hand. The religious ceremony is called “to bring the nevbe, to heat the nevbe, to open the nevbe” and it is more common in the sects of Kâdirî, Rifâî and Sa’dî. It helps exhilarating the participants of the rite. The nevbe rite begins with the intermittent, slow and tremulating beats of the halîle and accelerates with traditional hymns. The head of the rite (zakirbaşı), the elders and the participants play the kudüm and the dervishes play the mazhar or the bendir, either sitting or standing. The band made up of these rhythm instruments is called ‘nevbezen’. It’s double bowled version is also called as ‘nevbe-bronz kudüm’.
